Biography

Andrew Harrison classical saxophonist performing

Indian-American saxophonist Andrew Harrison is a concerto soloist, chamber musician, and recording artist whose performances showcase the saxophone as a powerful and expressive voice on the classical concert stage. Praised by Classical Sonoma for "electric performances of stunning expression" and described by the Austin American-Statesman as a "magician showing off his tricks," Harrison has developed a reputation for performances marked by lyricism, virtuosity, and a distinctive command of color. As a soloist, Harrison has appeared with orchestras and wind ensembles throughout the United States, including the Santa Rosa Symphony, Chandler Symphony, Orchestra Santa Monica, Sonoma County Philharmonic, South Valley Symphony Orchestra, Pacific Symphony Ensembles, and various collegiate and regional wind ensembles. His work as a concerto artist reflects a broader mission to position the saxophone as a compelling and natural solo voice within the classical tradition.

Harrison has earned recognition in several major competitions, including the U.S. Army Band "Pershing's Own" Collegiate Concerto Competition, the LMC Frances Walton Competition, and The American Prize. His playing has been described as "spectacular" by LA Opus, with The Instrumentalist praising his "broad and rich" sound. A committed advocate for both new and overlooked repertoire, Harrison has commissioned and premiered more than sixty chamber works and seven concerti, collaborating with a wide range of emerging and established composers. His artistic work reflects a commitment to expanding the saxophone's concert presence through repertoire that is expressive, personal, and connected to the musical world of today.

As a chamber musician, Harrison is the co-founder of Duo HaLo, his saxophone and piano duo with pianist Jason Lo. The duo has appeared in recital, masterclass, and residency settings across the United States, presenting programs that combine original works, transcriptions, contemporary repertoire, and reimagined masterworks. Harrison's recording work further reflects his dedication to expanding the saxophone's voice in classical music. His projects with Duo HaLo include the debut album Imaginary Folksongs and reFrame, both on Azure Sky Records. His recordings highlight the same priorities that define his work as a soloist: lyricism, expressive clarity, and the continued expansion of the saxophone's place within the classical tradition.

A dedicated educator and clinician, Harrison serves as Lecturer of Classical Saxophone at Sonoma State University. He has previously taught at San Diego State University School of Music, Mt. San Antonio College, Cerritos College, the French Conservatory of Music, and the Colburn School, and has presented masterclasses at institutions including the University of Southern California, Southern Illinois University, Webster University,
Franklin College, and the New England Conservatory.

Harrison holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music and a Master of Music degree from the University of Texas at Austin Butler School of Music. He performs exclusively on Eastman Winds saxophones and is an endorsing artist for Eastman Winds and Key Leaves Saxophone Accessories.
